The Fun of Copy Editing

Yesterday, I found this piece from the Columbia Journalism Review: “Revenge of the copy editors: Grammar pros find internet stardom.” It’s a hoot.

I see people’s eyes start to glaze over whenever I try to explain what copy editors do. I don’t think that my explanations of what I do are boring, but rather that it sounds like I’m sitting for a never-ending English exam. Editing can be loads of fun though.

Language is constantly evolving, and so are the “rules” we follow for how to present written content with consistency, clarity, and coherency to make the reading experience pleasant for the intended audience.

The CJR piece made me laugh and smile because copy editing is anything but boring. You can tell that the copy editors represented in it have fun with what they do. Check it out! You might even learn something new.
